Facts about water damage

7/16/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage emergencies aren’t common problems for property owners, but when flooding occurs due to clogged drains, broken or leaking pipes, or the weather, it becomes a problem of overwhelming proportion. When these emergencies are unfamiliar, a million questions arise that you don’t have answers for. Here are some important pieces of information that you should know.

The water that damages your property could be highly contaminated and could cause illness or even death. Not every water damage situation is treacherous to your health, but some are and you should take the proper safety measures for each situation.

  • Water contains bacteria that could be hazardous and could cause illness.
  • Highly contaminated water that comes from sources such as sewage backup, overflowing toilets, or storm water is the most polluted water and can cause serious illness or death.

Cleanup needs to happen immediately:

Secondary damage happens quickly in water damage situations. Within 24-48 hours, mold growth occurs and can cause significant structural and safety issues. To minimize damage, it is important to extract the water and dry the affected areas immediately. A Superbowl sized Water Damage

A trailer full of air movers on Superbowl Sunday

Sunday morning, 7:30 am. Thoughts swirling around about who will win the Superbowl this afternoon, or maybe what appetizers you'll chow down on?

7:30 am for our team on Superbowl Sunday meant heading out to a local hotel after a pipe burst. Four floors of flooded carpeting, wet walls and ceilings.

Our offensive team of about 10 huddled together before heading out to save the day. Once onsite, our estimator walked through with the manager to scope out the damage. The rest of the team snapped into action to start extracting standing water.

There were no fumbles as our team quickly worked together to get the large commercial building dry. We were in possession until the very end, when air movers could be set.

The real MVP's are the water technicians who worked together to make it like, "It Never Even Happened."

Can Your Water Damaged Carpet Be Saved?

5/21/2018 (Permalink)

The best way to protect yourself, and your family, is by calling SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor now!

Answer: "What is...call SERVPRO!"

After a water damage has affected your home the first step is to make sure the cause of loss has been stopped to avoid any further damages. The next step is to stop the water from spreading any further into the unaffected areas of your home. SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor staff are faster to any disaster and we will be onsite to help you with initial emergency services immediately.

Our community is no stranger to having water damages so picking SERVPRO, as the number one restoration company in this County, is an easy choice!

So let's answer the question...Can your water damaged carpet be saved?

After the water has been extracted from the carpet our technicians will look for the damage to your carpet. A common problem with water damaged carpet is that if it is not dried quickly there will be delamination and possibly mold. A way to tell that the carpet is delaminating is by looking at the carpet backing and seeing if the backing latex adhesive looks sound or if there are signs of mold or delamination.

Delamination is when there is separation of the secondary backing from the primary backing of the carpet. If the carpet and the secondary backing are not attached strongly enough they can separate and cause installed carpet to wrinkle.

If the water damage cause came from a grossly contaminated source, the carpet cannot be saved and it will be considered a Category 3 Water Damage. Grossly contaminated sources include( but are not limited to) storm water, sewer backups, toilet overflow with feces, and stagnant liquid that has begun to support bacterial growth.

The best way to protect yourself, and your family, is by calling SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor now!

  • Emergency Contact

-SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor is a 24 hour, 365 days a year, emergency service company. Our staff are ready to respond to any size damage faster. Our staff are here to help you get through one of the most difficult times a homeowner can go through.

  • Inspection and Damage Assessment

-The first step to helping you with your water damage is to provide you with a thorough inspection of the affected area. After checking for the source of moisture on your home or business the source must be stopped prior to any restoration or drying of the building. We will then identify the contamination of the water to ensure that the best practices will be made during the restoration of your property. SERVPRO staff inspect and test to determine the extent of the damage and how far the water has migrated to ensure proper and complete restoration. We also inspect for safety concerns for both you and our employees. If there are any safety issues, we will bring them to your attention immediately. Our staff will then help you by removing your contents from the affected area. The faster that your personal items are moved to a safer location, the better chance there is of restoring and saving them.

  • Water Removal/Water Extraction

-After the thorough inspection and the damage assessment has been completed, the water extraction process begins. This is the removal of the majority of the water to stop the water from migrating any further. Should your home require extensive restoration services, our trained technicians can conduct an organized and efficient move-out to protect your belongings from further damage. The goal is to complete the emergency water removal immediately so stop from damaging your home further. Removing this water effectively and quickly with reduce the chances for secondary water damage including mold and bacterial growth. Once the water has been removed, we inspect the carpet and pad to determine if they should be removed to protect and dry the subfloor beneath. If needed, we will then remove the carpet and pad. Advanced equipment will then be used to monitor the conditions of the home, check for additional moisture and additional extraction as necessary.

  • Drying and Dehumidification

-Once the water has been removed, the floors and walls are inspected for trapped moisture. Nearly all building materials are porous and can retain the water. This water can break down the material, warp, or cause mold damages. Our professional staff will use room measurements, temperature, and relative humidity to determine the optimal amount of air movers and dehumidifiers to dry your home quickly and effectively. We’ll carefully monitor the conditions daily to ensure that the drying is progressing until the materials reach the acceptable drying goals.

  • Cleaning and Sanitizing

-In addition to cleaning the structure, SERVPRO staff are also able to clean your contents, upholstery, furniture, clothing and other restorable contents damaged by the water. This cleaning is necessary as the contents affected by the water will need professional attention and care to restore the material. SERVPRO specializes in the restoring of contents from fire, water, and mold. Our mentality is to “restore” vs. “replace”. This mind set will help you save money while preserving your keepsakes that can’t be replaced. We are also trained to identify and eliminate remaining offensive odors so that you can return to your home feeling comfortable again. Depending on the water damage, we may use antimicrobial, antibacterial, or other disinfectant treatments to clean your home. SERVPRO will also make sure that we remove and dispose of all damaged materials with guidance from you.

  • Restoration

-Restoring your property is the final step. SERVPRO staff will bring your home back to preloss condition. Restoration may include minor repairs or major repairs in your home.

SERVPRO Winterizing Tips

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

The one company you can trust to handle an water damage related issues is SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor!

Is your home ready for 6 more weeks of winter?

The Plumas County region is no stranger to extremely low temperatures during this time of year. When it comes to below freezing temperatures, you can expect there to be multiple pipes freezing and often bursting, causing water damages throughout the homes and businesses in the area.

The one company you can trust to handle an water damage related issues is SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor but the last thing you want is to have to deal with a water damage.

SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor has developed some tips you can take in advance to protect your home, save money, and prevent water damage.

1) Winterize your A/C and Water Lines.

Simply drain the water in any hoses and air conditioner pipes to prevent the cold weather from freezing it and causing the pipe to burst.  Also, make sure you do not have additional water collected inside of the equipment. This could damage the equipment and could also start a water damage.  Make sure to also turn off exterior water spigots and properly store away any window A/C units to prevent cold drafts from entering.

Step 2) Turn down your water heater.

Typically a water heater is set to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, but most households don’t need that much steam. By lowing the temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit you are not only reducing water heating cost but also preventing excess pressure on the pipes.

Step 3) Using Caulking and Weatherstripping.

This can be especially helpful when protecting your windows and doors from weather related water damage which can then lead to mold. Keep close attention to corners and where pipes or wires exit to prevent damage.

Step 4) Insulate your pipes.

This can help prevent pipes from bursting and can also be a money saver for paying less for hot water. You can find the needed insulation at most hardware stores in the area. Ideally, you want to choose the insulation with the highest heat-blocking power.

Step 5) Seal your ducts.

Get your duct work inspected to ensure that there is no issue and water is not creeping in. This can definitely go undetected for a long time and then you’ll have both water damage and mold on your hands!

In the event that your house does suffer from a water damage during the winter months, know that SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor is only a phone call away!

Moisture Detection

Moisture detection is a process of determining the moisture levels, in real numbers, throughout the affected areas of your home. This may include the use of infra-red detection methods, moisture meters and hygrometers to ensure all hidden picks of water or moisture are uncovered and can be dried. We utilize large, powerful air movers to increase the circulation which then increases the evaporation of water and humidity. We also use dehumidifiers, chemical and mechanical, for rapid and thorough drying.

Water Damaged Carpet- Can it be Saved?

5/22/2017 (Permalink)

Water damage can cause discoloration, break down, permanent damage, and mold growth on materials if left unattended to.

Category 3 Water exposure may cause severe illness of even death if ingested.

Our advanced equipment helps our staff to get the job finished faster and more accurately than our local competitors. The sooner that SERVPRO is called and is there to help you, the better your chances are of avoiding mold. Mold can start growing just 48 hours after a water damage event which leads to more cost and a longer job process.

SERVPRO Steps to Water Damage Restoration:

Every water damage is different and cannot be handled the same way as another. The general process, however, does stay the same.

SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor is here for you from the beginning to the very end of your water damage restoration project.

SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor’s House Winterizing Tips

2/3/2017 (Permalink)

Emergency water extraction after a pipe burst affected several rooms of a home during the winter season.

Phil the groundhog just predicted an additional 6 weeks of winter is in store for us. Is your house ready to take on the additional time?

SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor certified staff have developed some steps that you can take to protect your home and prevent water damage.

Step 1) Winterize your A/C and Water Lines

Simply drain the water in any hoses and air conditioner pipes to prevent the cold weather from freezing it and causing the pipe to burst.  Also, make sure you do not have additional water collected inside of the equipment. This could damage the equipment and could also start a water damage.  Make sure to also turn off exterior water spigots and properly store away any window A/C units to prevent cold drafts from entering.

Step 2) Turn down your water heater

Typically a water heater is set to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, but most households don’t need that much steam. By lowing the temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit you are not only reducing water heating cost but also preventing excess pressure on the pipes.

Step 3) Using Caulking and Weatherstripping

This can be especially helpful when protecting your windows and doors from weather related water damage which can then lead to mold. Keep close attention to corners and where pipes or wires exit to prevent damage.

Step 4) Insulate your pipes

This can help prevent pipes from bursting and can also be a money saver for paying less for hot water. You can find the needed insulation at most hardware stores in the area. Ideally, you want to choose the insulation with the highest heat-blocking power.

Step 5) Seal your ducts

Get your duct work inspected to ensure that there is no issue and water is not creeping in. This can definitely go undetected for a long time and then you’ll have both water damage and mold on your hands!

In case your house does suffer from a water damage during the winter months know that SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor is open 24/7 and can respond to losses all over the Butte County, Lake Almanor, and surrounding areas anytime.

Call us today if you have any questions or concerns about your home’s safety at (530)899-9141.

Butte County Residential Water Damage Taken Care Of Immediately

9/14/2016 (Permalink)

Collapsed ceiling after a local water damage.

It Is Critical To Get Residential Water Damage Taken Care Of Immediately In Butte County

Water damage in your Butte County home is truly insidious. First, there are many reasons or causes for this type of damage. It could come from outside the home, such as from a local river, torrential rains or a stream that has gotten too big for its banks. It might be from a leaking pipe or water heater, even an appliance that has sprung a leak. It might also be from a leak in the roof or a seeping in from outside through a less than adequately sealed basement wall.

No matter where it comes from, a Butte County water damage restoration company is in the best position to take care of it and to recover from it than anyone else because of their training, experience and specialized equipment for the tasks involved. When significant water is noticed, calling your insurance company first is critical. They can let you know what is permissible as far as costs they are liable. The next call needs to go to  your locally trusted water damage restoration company. SERVPRO!

The several things that are crucial to completing, when they get to your home are to inspect the entire house to find the source of the water. Also, design the plan to get it stopped, and it all cleaned up to make your home healthy again.

The things they look for, beyond where the water is coming from is where it is going. Where it has been is also very telling. The water may touch many things as it makes it way down to the lowest level of the house. This means it can be going down walls. It can flow down the walls on either side of the drywall. It can also be absorbed and flow up the walls, again, on either side of the sheet of wallboard.

It will, if the water leaking source is on an upper level, go down through floors and then ceilings, staining first and then causing them to deteriorate and fall. This is part of the overall damaging effects of the water, by itself. When you consider the introduction of mold spores, from which mold grows, into the mix, this is part of what is considered water damage.

The inspection, already begun by the water damage technicians, locates the places where molds are present. They accomplish this by specially developed equipment that locates the smallest source of moisture even if behind or inside walls. Often parts of these walls must be removed in the pursuit of thorough cleaning.

When all water damage is located, and all water has been removed, the actual restoration is accomplished by repairing any of this damage and getting the entire house back to the way it looked before. This means replacing drywall, cleaning fabrics, such as clothing, carpets and throw rugs. It also entails painting and sanitize every surface.

We are considered either a preferred vendor or at the top of the list, of over 300 insurance and property management companies. We can help alleviate stress from the entire claims process.

Moisture Mapping is a process of determining moisture levels, in real numbers, throughout the affected areas of your property. This may include infra-red detection for temperature variations, moisture meters, and hygrometers to ensure all hidden pockets of water or moisture are uncovered and dried. We utilize large, powerful air movers to increase circulation, thereby increasing the evaporation rate of unwanted water and humidity. Why you should call a professional restoration company in Butte County for water damage.

9/7/2016 (Permalink)

One of our crew chiefs, Maria, working hard on a Butte County water/mold loss

A water damage restoration service is the kind of professional that no one wants to call, but when they are needed it is important not to delay.  Homeowners know that moisture is the enemy, capable of penetrating into just about any space, and taking advantage of every little crack and structural problem.  No matter how moisture gets into a building, the response should be the same.  Bring in a certified firm immediately to extract, dry and clean the structure to ensure that there are no lingering health threats once the moisture is gone.

If water has entered the structure through a contaminated source, do not try to handle it on your own. Floods and sewage backups contain multiple types of deadly bacteria, viruses and fungi, and even momentary skin contact can have serious effects on people causing serious illness.  A certified water damage restoration service not only has the tools to eliminate the moisture, but they also have the necessary protective equipment to remain free from harm.

Restoration technicians have a lot of technology at their disposal.  These include powerful truck mounted vacuums and pumping systems, high velocity air movers, dehumidifiers, heat injectors, moisture reading equipment, and a number of cleaning products formulated for destroying fungi and other microbial threats.  White the technicians work on the structure, disposing of compromised materials, and drying the rest, they will also destroy all mold and microbial colonies.  This is the only way to ensure a structure to be safe to live and work in.  Any other cleaning method is a dangerous gamble.

The professional technicians with SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor have the latest IICRC certifications and the most up to date equipment and technology to help with any size water damage issue in any building located in Butte County and surrounding areas.  Call us today at 530-899-9141 for any emergency water damage or estimate to help clean up and restore your structure from any water related damage.
