Strategies for Mold Prevention and Control in your Butte County Home

Mold spreading throughout a Susanville home after being left to sit. SERVPRO will stop the mold in its tracks!

No matter how spotless you keep your home or office, mold is likely to exist to some degree. Mold only becomes a problem if it is allowed to grow and spread unchecked. So how do you know if you have a mold problem? Here are some ways you can assess the seriousness of the problem.

Mold Causes

Windows and doors provide an entryway for mold spores into your home. Mold spores can also be tracked in on your clothing or on the fur of your pets. Remember, mold thrives on moisture, meaning the spores will grow if they are exposed to consistently damp areas. Mold is especially prevalent where water leaks or flooding has occurred. It feeds on paper, cardboard, carpets, drywall, upholstery fabric, and just about anything made from wood.

Common household molds can appear as a discoloration in your ceiling, wall or floor. Colors can range from blacks and blues to oranges, reds and yellows. Not all discolorations are mold though. Cigarette smoke, dust, oils and grease can also cause discolored patches in your home. A few drops of bleach on a discolored spot might reveal mold if the discoloration changes or vanishes completely. If you suspect that you have mold, don’t panic. Hire a professional to assess the problem if the area is very large or greenish-black.

Mold Odors

If you smell something musty or earthy in your home, it may be that you’re smelling mold. Sometimes mold exists inside of walls, and the smell is the only immediate way to tell if you have a problem. Check for leaks inside and outside your walls and try to track down the source of the smell. You can decide how to approach the problem once you’ve determined how much mold you’re dealing with.

If you live in a very humid or rainy climate, a small amount of mold is not unusual. That said, you should be wary of any mold that covers more than about 3 square feet area. If the molded area is a larger than a sheet of plywood, that’s cause for concern. The mold will need to be remediated by a professional to stop it from spreading any further.
