House fire with dark smoke coming out of windows and doors Smoke and soot are very invasive! Call SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor to help! 530-899-9141

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our highly trained SERVPRO staff inspects and accurately assesses the extent of the damages, and then develops a comprehensive plan of action.

Every smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, as each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. Our staff will always treat you and your possessions with the outmost respect and care. SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor is a Full-Service Restoration Company that will work with you and make your home like new again, "Like it never even happened."

Here are some facts about smoke and soot:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Helpful Fire Safety Tips for Appliances!

12/10/2019 (Permalink)

Cross stitched house with home safe home written above. SERVPRO of Chico/ Lake Almanor is here to help! 530-899-9141

Household appliances make our lives easier. However, every machine that operates on electricity or gas presents safety risks and should be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Listed below are some essential appliance fire safety tips to help you prevent disasters in your home:

General Safety Tips

-  Keep appliances at a safe distance from wet areas, especially in the bathroom, kitchen, garage or basement.

-  Keep potentially flammable items such as furniture, clothes or curtains, away from heaters or appliances that produce heat.

-  If an appliance or lamp sputters, produces a spark or gives you a shock when running, have it repaired as soon as possible.

-  Never force an appliance with a three-prong plug into a two-prong outlet or extension cord.

-  Never run cords under carpets or rugs, as this can damage the cords and cause a fire.

-  Check the wires of appliances regularly. Replace or repair frayed, damaged wires.

-  Don’t plug too many plugs into an electrical outlet; plug only one wattage appliance into an outlet at a time.

-  Unplug all small electrical appliances, such as irons, toasters, hair dryers, and shavers when not in use.

- Install smoke alarms on every level of your home. Test the alarms once a month and replace batteries each year.

Clothes Dryer

-  Properly ground clothes dryers properly and keep the area around your dryer clear of things that can burn.

-  Always use a lint filter when operating a dryer and clean the lint from the filter before or after each use.

-  Vent dryers directly outside using rigid or flexible metal venting materials. Make sure the air exhaust vent pipe is not restricted.

-  Clean out the lint from the vent pipe once a year or more often if clothes are taking longer than normal to dry.

Electric or Gas Ranges

-  Remove grease or other debris from the burner, stove top or oven. Never leave combustible items near ovens.

-  Always supervise the range when cooking and turn it off when you leave the kitchen.

-  Roll up your sleeves, tie back long hair, and be cautious to avoid slips, trips, and/or falls.

-  Before using the range, make sure you don’t smell gas inside the oven or near it.

Dishwasher

-  Try to only use the dishwasher when you are home. If a leak were to happen and no one was home the damage could be far worse than if you were able to stop it.

-  Avoid using extension cords as a permanent solution to power the dishwasher. Plug your dishwasher into a grounded wall socket.

-  Check the plastic components that release the detergent on the interior of the door. If damaged, these components can cause water to leak over the machine’s internal wires, resulting in a fire.

Electric Heater

-  Keep heaters at least 3 feet away from flammable materials like paper, trash bins, furniture, drapes or carpet.

-  Place heaters on a stable, horizontal surface (preferably on the floor) where it can’t be knocked over easily.

Microwave Oven

-  Never use aluminum foil or metal in a microwave oven, as metal can start a fire. Use only microwave-safe food containers or dishes.

-  Microwaves are not designed for drying or sterilizing baby bottles, clothes or blankets.

-  Clean the microwave, including the outer edge, from food debris, grease or stains regularly.

While household appliances make out lives easier, they can cause a lot of damage if not used properly. Here at SERVPRO of Chico/ Lake Almanor we’re always here to help!

Winter is Coming – Follow these tips to stay safe this chilly season!

electrical wire that has been frayed and is exposing a blue wire and a yellow and green wire with text and logo on right side Call SERVPRO of Chico/ Lake Almanor! We're always here to help! 530-899-9141

With the recent public safety power outages, homeowners may be forced to take uncommon and drastic measures to provide heat. Ensure that you’re following all safety guidelines for the methods you use, whether it be an inside propane burner, candles, wood stoves or open flames. Even when the power is on traditional space heaters and electric blankets deserve precautions – clearing away low hanging sheets, towels and checking extension cords for bad plugs and frayed insulation.

Our SERVPRO office in Chico, has received many phone calls from residents who have experienced Winter related fires in kitchens and living areas - all in an attempt to keep warm.  Our highly trained SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor technicians understand that accidents happen.

Helpful Tips For Home Fire Safety

  1. When the power is out, it is usually a bad choice to use propane heating units inside living areas simply because of the danger of carbon monoxide build up. CO2 is highly lethal in strong concentrations. Without odor or smell the gas from internal space heaters can cause loss of consciousness for occupants.
  2. Extra caution is advised with an open heating flame being too close to unseen combustible material such as paper, bed sheets and fabric towels.
  3. When the power is on be on the lookout for damaged electric wall sockets and exposed wiring in extension cords. Also keep in mind that home electrical wiring and the circuit breaker can only take so much wattage on a circuit.  Always follow the voltage limits and manufacturer directions on the device.

More Tips for Space and Propane Heater Safety

  1.  Space heaters require a clear, flat surface for safety and to remain stable while in operation.
  2. Don’t put space heaters on carpets or rugs.
  3.  Newer model heaters are installed with a floor shut off device that if the unit is leaning or falls shut off occurs.  Check your heater to make sure it has that device.
  4. The key safety point for propane heaters is to have adequate ventilation to outside air. Also, battery powered combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors installed around heating areas can be potential life savers – especially at night when temperatures drop, heaters are left on and occupants are asleep.
  5. Finally, children, pets and the elderly or those persons with compromised immune systems can be especially susceptible to the inhalation of invisible heater off-gassing, fumes and CO2.

Your friends here at SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor hope that by implementing the above guidelines you may never have to experience the impact of a fire damage resulting from unsafe space heaters, propane heating units, or electrical device malfunctions.

If you do experience any fire damage events in your home call us immediately for a fast day or night response from our trained and qualified technicians.

What is fire restoration?

7/12/2019 (Permalink)

Fire damage restoration is the act of cleaning and restoring property as well as personal belongings that have sustained smoke or fire damage. The goal of fire damage restoration service is to salvage damaged items and restore your home so that it can once again be inhabited. Restoration companies are able to diagnose the causes of your fire and provide restoration and reconstruction solutions.

Fires can and do cause massive amounts of damage, destroying your property and bringing massive amounts of unhealthy smoke and soot along the way.

The benefits of hiring a restoration company for fire clean up are...

Securing Your Health

The dangers of fires last well beyond the initial incident. Ash, soot, and the potential for mold may linger for years if they are not professionally dealt with immediately. Also, some fires may release dangerous compounds like asbestos into the air. A fire damage restoration company will assess the damage, secure the area, and ensure that you enter a safe and welcoming home.

Saving You Money

If left untreated, the damage to your home may compound over time. Odors may linger and settle further into the walls, and mold may begin to grow underneath your floors. These problems can be expensive to fix in the future, but a reputable fire damage restoration company will get rid of them before it gets worse.

Fires are always a tragedy, and having your home returned to its original state will help with the healing process. A restoration company will do everything they can to save your treasured belongings, and they will get your home back to its original condition as quickly as possible. Plus, you will return home with confidence knowing that it's safe and free from future complications.

SERVPRO of Chico/ Lake Almanor has resources to clean Camp Fire homes

6/4/2019 (Permalink)

"May you find Paradise to be all its name implies"

It is no secret that the trail of destruction from the 2019 Northern California Camp Fire was massive. With over 150,000 acres burned and 14,500 homes and businesses lost, it would seem as though there would be nothing left in our quiet little corner of the world. But even in the wake of such destruction, many homes were spared.

For the homes that were so scarcely saved, an entire set of problems came with the relief. After everything around these standing homes was burned, they then needed to be cleaned from the contaminated soot. This is where our small team of local SERVPRO employees were able to quickly join forces with other SERVPRO'S in the franchise system.

SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor had the full support of 28 teams headed to Northern California to help get residents back in their homes. The farthest franchise traveled 1,816 miles all the way from South Tulsa, OK to join forces with our local team. After 6 months of cleaning and reconstruction, SERVPRO is wrapping up their part in getting affected Butte County residents back in their homes.

We want to send a sincere thank you to all the franchises who aided us in our efforts of bringing some sense of normalcy back to these home and business owners.

Safety While Using a Space Heater

11/28/2018 (Permalink)

Electric space heaters account for more than 70 percent of all winter injuries and more than half of all property damages caused by heating fires.

With temperatures expected to fall consistently throughout Plumas County and surrounding areas, people all over are flocking once again to their local box store in search of space heaters. For many Americans their only source of heat in their homes is the use of portable electric space heaters. But how safe are these space heaters? Let’s take a look at how truly safe these heaters are and how to use them correctly.

Portable Space Heaters

According to a 2013 report by the National Fire Protection Agency, electric space heaters account for more than 70 percent of all winter injuries and more than half of all property damages caused by heating fires. There are several different kinds of electric space heaters available: oil or water-filled radiators; fan-forced heaters, that blow hot air over hot metal coils; ceramic heaters, the blow air over a hot ceramic heating element; and an infrared heater, where the heat is created by infrared bulbs. Each of these heaters is different but they can all be dangerous if they are not taken care of properly.

Safety Tips

  • Before purchasing your new electric space heater
  • It is important to research which brand and model unit is the safest.
  • Look for a unit with both a tip-over and overheating protection mechanism. These protections are especially important if you plan on using the unit in a home with a child or pet that could knock over the unit.
  • Look for a unit with a temperature control and automated shut off when it reaches your ideal temperature.
  • Before plugging in the heater, make sure to inspect it to make sure it is not damaged and is safe to operate.
  • Keep the unit at least three feet from anything that could burn like a bed or curtains and away from children, the elderly, and pets.
  • Place the heater on a solid surface away from foot traffic.
  • Never plug your unit into an extension cord and be sure to turn it off before going to bed or when leaving a room. Leaving an electric heater on unattended could prove damaging or even deadly.

As with any possible hazard in your home, it is important to have certain things on hand: a fire extinguisher, a safety plan, and SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor’s emergency phone number. With these items on hand, your home will always be safe and in good hands!

Using Your Fireplace Safely

8/15/2018 (Permalink)

Stash a fire extinguisher near the fireplace so that it's handy - just in case.

SERVPRO Fireplace Safety Tips!

It is nearing that time of year here in Plumas County when settling in with a cup o’ joe, a good book, and a blazing fireplace is heavenly.

But before you can even think about lighting up that fire after a year of waiting, take a look at these 12 safety tips to prevent damage to your home.

  1. Aim to minimize the buildup of soot and creosote.

Minimize the buildup of soot and creosote (which can cause chimney fires) by using seasoned hardwood or manufactured logs. Manufactured logs burn even cleaner than real wood.

  1. Understand that manufactured logs burn hotter than wood.

If you do use manufactured logs in your fireplace instead of wood, be sure to follow the directions on the bag for lighting and use. These logs burn hotter than regular wood, and can potentially warp metal chimneys if you burn more than one log at a time.

  1. Burn only wood or manufactured logs in the fireplace.

Only burn wood or manufactured logs in your fireplace, as some items - including wrapping paper and foam peanuts - release toxic fumes. And never burn Christmas greenery in the fireplace.

  1. Beware the roaring fire - it looks attractive but it can crack the chimney.

Though a roaring fire in the fireplace looks attractive, it's really not as safe as a more controlled burn. Just a couple of logs at a time, please.

And a too-hot fire can crack your chimney - necessitating an expensive chimney repair.

  1. Stack fireplace logs near the back of the hearth.

Ensure fireplace logs - whether wood or manufactures - are stacked as far as possible to the back of the fireplace. This will help ensure sparks and embers don't spark out of the fireplace and into your carpet.

  1. Open the damper before you light your fire.

Open the damper before you light a fire in your fireplace, and keep the damper open until the fire is completely extinguished.

  1. Open fireplace doors.

Open the fireplace doors (if your fireplace has them) and use a fireplace screen when you've got the fire crackling.

  1. Keep the area around the fireplace clear.

Don't position your Christmas tree - or anything else - near the fireplace. Should embers spark out of the fireplace and into the room, you want to make sure there is nothing nearby that will catch fire.

  1. Don't leave a fire unattended.

For safety's sake, never leave a fire unattended. And yes, this means you shouldn't go to sleep with a fire blazing away.

  1. Open a window when you light a fire.

Fires require about five times as much oxygen as a room usually needs. To make sure there's enough oxygen for the fire to burn efficiently, open a window when you light a fire.

  1. Keep the fireplace mantel clear of hanging decorations.

If you drape your fireplace mantel with garlands or hang stockings or cards from it, don't light a fire. These flammable items are too close for comfort.

  1. Keep a fire extinguisher handy.

Stash a fire extinguisher near the fireplace so that it's handy - just in case.

If a fire damage should occur in your home, trust your local professionals at SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor.

How to Avoid Fire Damage While Cooking

5/1/2018 (Permalink)

Make sure you know when to call it quits and evacuate if the fire gets out of control.

Leaving cooking unattended and not taking proper safety precautions may lead to a fire endangering not just your home but the lives of everyone in it.

Cooking tops and stoves have been used for thousands of years. They are essential to our civilization and lifestyles, but we have yet to find a way to completely stop cooking fires from happening altogether. This means that, until these fires are a part of history, safety precautions need to be taken. These appliances carry out basic necessity, but also carry a lot of risk while in use. The lack of installed smoke alarms in the average kitchen is staggering. They should regularly be placed directly above the stove, or nearby, for fast detection. Stoves can cause fire damage, large and small, and can sometimes even lead to the total loss of a home. Avoiding dangerous practices and taking care to attend to all cooking is essential for your safety and the safe keeping of your home and items. Here are some tips to avoiding fire and smoke damage to your home caused by cooking or stove malfunction.

Always Mind Food

A common source of fire damage in the Butte County area is when food is left unattended to while cooking on a stove. Even if you are minding the time and have a timer set up while cooking, being out of the room altogether is dangerous and is advised against. Fires are instantaneous and are difficult to stop once they are started. Especially oily foods, dry foods, or cooking utensils being left on stovetops can burst into flames very easily. Safe cooking practices involve regular monitoring of the food and the stove, this is essential to kitchen fire prevention.

Watch Where Your Put Things

Another common cause of fires, one we have discussed previously, is leaving items unattended beside the stove or food. This includes items such as potholders, kitchen rags, cooking utensils, and other items that are easily flammable. A hot, or in use, stove should never be used as a resting place for anything.

Keep Safety Materials Nearby

If worst comes to worst and a fire does occur having a smoke detector and a fire extinguisher nearby is the best way to stop the fire from spreading after it has started. Damaging your stove, or not being able to eat the burning dinner, should be the last thing on your mind. Focus on saving your home and your loved ones. Make sure you know when to call it quits and evacuate if the fire gets out of control.

Who Do I Call For Fire Damage Services?

1/17/2018 (Permalink)

Fire damage takes the specific care and knowledge that only SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor staff specialize in!

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home or business which can then lead to hidden damage and odors. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allow us to properly inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action. There are several components to consider when dealing with a fire damage-

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and the upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

We also need to take into consideration the type of smoke.

There are different types of smoke and as a result there are different types of soot residue found after having a fire damage. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor will test the soot to determine what type of smoke damage it is and the best way of treating it. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information gathered in the pretesting. Here is some information on the types of smoke and residue-

Wet Smoke- Plastic and Rubber

Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke- Paper and Wood

Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore so does the smoke.

Protein Fire Residue- Produce by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Practicing Fire Safety Tips

8/28/2017 (Permalink)

Did you know SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor is a 24 Hour, 365 days a year, emergency service company here to help you?

SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor encourages all families and members of this community to practice these safety tips in order to prevent damage to your home or business and personal injury.

1) Watch carefully when cooking. Although the saying of "A watched pot never boils" seems accurate, it is definitely not safe to leave your cooking unattended to. Especially if you are using the stove, oven, or a fryer. Make sure you keep a close eye on what you're doing and keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case of accidents.

2) Don't use space heaters in a cramped space. Make sure you give heaters space by separating it at least 3 feet from anything that is flammable.

3) Smoke outside. The ashes from smoking are still extremely hot and can be a major fire hazard. Make sure you never smoke in bed or in an area with many flammable items.

4) Inspect electrical cords frequently. Do not use damaged cords or damaged electronics. These items are at risk for causing both a shock and fire hazard.

5) Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children.

6) Have a fire escape plan. See our blog information on how to make an effective fire damage evacuation plan.

7) Don't leave a candle unattended. This is one of the most common sources for a fire damage in homes.

8) Test smoke alarms regularly. If you do not have one installed, reach out to the local fire department for information on proper installation.

Be fire safe and make sure to keep your family involved to keep them safe as well!

Fire Safety: An Emergency Escape Plan

8/22/2017 (Permalink)

Fire damage does not only damage your home but also your comfort in your home. Trust SERVPRO to restore that comfort for you.

During a fire emergency it is important to make sure you and your family get out safely and quickly. The best way to be prepared for this emergency is to have a, well practiced, emergency evacuation plan. Not only is this plan essential in the home but also in the work place as well.

Here are a few ideas to help make the best emergency escape plan that works for you.

1) Sit down with your family, or employees, and draw a map of each level in your home or business. Make sure to include all doors and windows in your sketch. Find at least two ways to safely get out of the room in the event of a fire damage.

2) Consider purchasing and utilizing escape ladders for sleeping areas on multiple floors of your home. Only make purchases that have been evaluated and approved.

3) Choose a safe meeting place for once you are out of the home that is far away enough to still be able to see the building but to be out of harms way. Make sure everyone in the building is aware of this location.

4) Teach your children on how to escape on their own in case you are not able to get them out. Also make sure you have a plan in place for those who have a disability.

5) Practice,Practice, Practice! Both at night and during the day as emergencies cannot be predicted.

By following these recommendations, you are making a commitment to yourself and your family that you will do everything in your power to be safe!

Smoke Alarms Save Lives During a Fire!

7/21/2017 (Permalink)

The Kitchen can be one of the most fire hazards in your home. Make sure to not leave the stove on when unattended. This may cause a fire damage.

Smoke Alarms may seem a little annoying at times when you are trying to cook dinner and it starts sounding off. But Smoke Alarms save lives when they are properly installed and maintained!

In your home, Smoke Alarms should be place in ever room. This includes your basement or garage. Make sure you consistently check your Smoke Alarms to make sure they are in the best working condition to be able to warn you of any fires in your home. Smoke smoke alarms without batteries can be wired directly into the home but they still need to be replaced every ten years or earlier. The battery operated alarms will warn you when the battery life is low so you can replace them promptly. Make sure you don't put this off.

Should you need help installing a smoke alarm or help with deciding where to put them, contact your local fire department or the American Red Cross Association for Assistance.

Do Not Enter Your Home After a Fire Damage!

6/19/2017 (Permalink)

Do not enter a home after a fire damage unless given the authorization to do so by a professional!

After having a fire affect your home you may have the urge to run back inside after the fire has been put out to examine the damage. SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor suggests strongly against that impulse.

Even after the fire department has put out the fire there are still dangers. Do not reenter the home until a thorough inspection has been completed and you are given the thumbs up by a professional. Although a firefighter, building official, or structural stabilization professional may say that it is “OK To Enter”, that does not mean that it is “Safe To Enter.” There are still several elements that can be a hazard if caution is not used. The building may look structurally safe but that is all dependent on the damage to the floor, walls, and ceiling. Fires can weaken these areas without showing any signs. Beware of protruding nails and screws that can puncture through your shoes and injury your feet.

Avoid the legal liability and injury of your curious friends and neighbors by not permitting them access to the damaged area. Avoid allowing children to roam freely in the affected area as not only the aftermath of the smoke and fire damage can be internally damaging but the compromised structure can be a hazard.

Electrocution hazards are always an issue if the electrical service has not been disconnected. Treat all electrical devices as hazards and do not attempt to use them until given the “Safe to Operate” approval from a professional.

SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor is key on safety both for you and for your family. Call us for an inspection after your fire damage.

SERVPRO Safety Tips: Avoiding Dryer Vent Fires

11/2/2016 (Permalink)

This clogged dryer hose could be the cause of a house fire in your home.

You probably have heard it a million times: the build-up of lint in a dryer vent can cause a fire. So you religiously clean out the lint screen after each load of laundry and think that you’re averting the risk.

The reality is that while you are reducing the risk, you’re not eliminating it because those lint screens are only catching roughly 25% of the lint. The remaining 75% goes into the dryer vent and sticks to the walls. The U.S. Fire Administration (part of FEMA) cites that there are 2900 home clothes dryer fires every year resulting in an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss. And the leading cause: failure to clean them.

If you want to make sure you have safe and efficient vent system for your dryer, you have to address these issues related to the dryer vent hose:

Length: The longer the dryer hose, the more chance for lint buildup. The more chance for buildup, the greater risk of fire. Check the specifications on your dryer; it will quote the maximum distance for your duct/hose. Also, check your town code requirements. (They tend to range between 25′ and 35′ maximum.) But “the shorter the better” is the rule to follow.

Bends: Every bend is the equivalent of adding additional feet to your dryer hose. (We read different numbers: every bend adding the equivalent of somewhere between 2.5 and 5 feet to the risk because as you can imagine, bends catch lint!) Combine that with the information above about duct length when you’re planning where to place a dryer in your home.

Material: Use METAL DRYER DUCTS. Flexible dryer ducts made of foil or plastic can sag and let lint build up at low points. Ridges can also trap lint. So metal ducts, either flexible or solid, are much safer because they don’t sag, so lint is less likely to build up. Plus, if a fire does start, a metal duct has a greater chance of containing it.

Cleaning: Clean the duct regularly (and keep cleaning that lint screen with every load of laundry). You should also clean inside, behind, and underneath the dryer because lint builds up there as well.

Warning signs that your dryer vent needs to be cleaned include:

  • Drying times are taking longer.
  • Your dryer is getting hot when you’re using it and your clothes are being damaged.
  • You can’t see any steam or hear any noise outside your house at the wall vent when you run the dryer.

SERVPRO Fireplace Safety Tips!

10/12/2016 (Permalink)

Don't let a Fire Damage stop your from enjoying the season. Use these SERVPRO tips to help!

It is nearing that time of year when settling in with a cup o’ joe, a good book, and a blazing fireplace is heavenly.

You don’t want a visit from Good Ol’ Smokey The Bear while you are enjoying the season.

If a fire damage should occur in your home, trust your local professionals at SERVPRO of Chico/Lake Almanor.

9/14/2016 (Permalink)

Prepare your family and your home for disasters to occur

With temperatures expected to fall again throughout Butte County and surrounding areas, people all over are flocking once again to their local box store in search of space heaters.

Safety Tips

Before purchasing your new electric space heater, it is important to research which brand and model unit is the safest. Look for a unit with both a tip-over and overheating protection mechanism. These protections are especially important if you plan on using the unit in a home with a child or pet that could knock over the unit. You should also look for a unit with a temperature control and automated shut off when it reaches your ideal temperature. Before plugging in the heater, make sure to inspect it to make sure it is not damaged and is safe to operate. Keep the unit at least three feet from anything that could burn like a bed or curtains and away from children, the elderly, and pets. Place the heater on a solid surface away from foot traffic. Never plug your unit into an extension cord and be sure to turn it off before going to bed or when leaving a room.

How to Avoid Stove Top Fire Damage in your Butte County Home

Butte County home that suffered from fire damage. Don't let this be you! Be aware!

Attended Cooking and Keeping Safety Materials Nearby Can Help Prevent Fires From Originating in a Kitchen

Cooking tops and stoves have been used by civilizations with advanced metal or stone work for thousands of years, as it is a simple enough concept: a plate or surface is heated by open flame sufficient to cook and burn any food placed upon it. However, these essential appliances also carry a fair bit of risk and are one of the most common causes of fire damage in homes worldwide. Smoke alarms in kitchens are regularly placed directly above the stove so as to react quickly to any fires that start on it. Stoves can cause fire damage large and small, sometimes leading to total loss of the home, so avoiding dangerous practices around them is essential for your home's safety.

Always Mind Food

A common source of fire damage in Butte County is food left cooking unattended on stoves. Even if you are minding time and have a timer set up while cooking, being out of the room while something is cooking is never a good idea and can lead to fires. Especially with oily or dry foods, food items left on stovetops can burst into flame very quickly, spreading to nearby wooden cabinets and walls. Safe cooking involves regular monitoring of food on the stove, and this is essential in kitchen fire prevention.

Watch Where You Put Things

Another common cause of fires is when a resident leaves a fabric cooking item, such as a potholder, laying on a hot stove. Any object left on a stove has a risk of starting a fire, and a hot stove top should never be used as a resting place for anything. Simply use the counter that is likely only a few feet away.

Keep Safety Materials Nearby

If worst comes to worst and a fire starts on a stove, make sure you have a smoke detector nearby and a fire extinguisher in the room. Damaging the stove with extinguisher materials should be the least of your concerns, so don't hold back. Above all, mitigating further damage from the fire is essential, and crucial to this is stopping any small fires in their tracks.
